Hui Taumata: Amplifying the Voices of Tangata Turi
23 August 2024
E aku nui, aku rahi o te ao hauā
Hui Taumata on 8 August 2024 was a powerful celebration of tangata turi!
Our community from across the motu gathered to share ideas, inspire each other, and drive positive change.
Preserving Cultural Integrity
Myra Barrett and I, passionate advocates for the Māori Deaf community, highlighted the urgent need for trilingual interpreters and culturally appropriate sign language. We emphasised the importance of preserving our cultural identity, supporting our youth, and bridging generational gaps. Myra even shared exciting plans for a weaving workshop!
“Collaboration is Key”
We believe that together, we can achieve amazing things! That's why we stressed the value of collaboration, open communication, and networking to overcome shared challenges and foster collective growth.
Our Inspiring Speakers:
Kelley Beamsley, Whaikaha Senior Advisor, shared her incredible work on Māori Deaf matters, including the Waitangi Tribunal and a trilingual interpreter scholarship. Catch her interpreting Sleeping Beauty at Circa Theatre in December!
Alejandria Manuel, Māori audiologist, shared her personal journey with auditory processing difficulties and her mission to improve healthcare for Māori with hearing issues. Her research focuses on Māori data sovereignty in vision and hearing healthcare.
Alexandra Carr, Wellbeing counsellor with the Department of Internal Affairs, supports survivors of abuse and leads the Deaf and Disability Engagement team. She invited Wahine Turi Māori to join the Deaf Advisory Group - join the movement! Let's continue to amplify the voices of tangata turi and create a brighter future together
Ngā mihi,
